At this time, we estimate that there are less than 50 accounts that have been hijacked using this technique

We are currently working to identify the legitimate account owners in order to recover access to their accounts and the content within them.

According to screenshots published on social media by some of the victims, the hack took place after the attackers contacted EA’s customer staff via a live chat feature and requested that they change the email address on their accounts.

The attacker persistently demanded until the customer support staff ignored normal procedures and changed the email address without any additional verification of the requester’s identity.

The game maker has announced that as a result of these hacks, it has decided to implement a re-training program for all customer support staff “with a particular focus on account security practices and the phishing techniques used in this case”.

In addition, EA has announced that they are expanding the account owner verification process and will now require approval from a team manager before changing an email address.

These changes may affect your wait time in some cases, but are necessary additional measures to ensure the safety of your player account

EA said it began investigating the incident last week. According to Eurogamer, whose initial report on the hack triggered EA’s investigation, the threatened individuals were targeting the top 100 traders of FIFA 22, EA’s soccer simulator and one of its most profitable video games.
