What is ICMP?

glossary

ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is one of the supporting protocols of the Internet Protocol Suite

ICMP is used by network devices, such as routers, to send error messages and operational information indicating success or failure when communicating with other IP addresses.

ICMP, unlike transport protocols such as TCP and UDP, is not normally used for data exchange between systems and is not normally used for end-user network applications (except for diagnostic tools such as ping and traceroute)

ICMP for IPv4 is defined in RFC 792, and ICMPv6, defined in RFC 4443, is used for Pv6
